Mattawan Township

The Township of Mattawan, is located 5 minutes north of Mattawa in the Nipissing District.  It can be accessed by Highway 533, with Highway 656 as a branch which leads you to Otto Holden Generating Station.

The first white settlers to arrive in this area was in the 1850’s.  The township was incorporated in the early 1880’s.  They were lumbermen who came to work for the Booth Lumber Company or farmers that wanted to work the land and sell their surplus to the lumber company.

Many lumbermen stayed and brought their families.  In 1948 there was an influx of new immigrants to this region because of the construction of the Otto Holden Generating Station.  This brought many people by train to this area and may stayed and made this township grow.
