Celebrate Community …
Last year we were pleased to present our first exhibit of the 2019 season in our Community Corner space at the Mattawa Museum. It featured a small-town business that has come to be a large icon on a Main Street in a small Northern Ontario town.
Some of the history in the press …
1st Generation …
The Chip Stand, as we all fondly know it, was started 75 years ago by Lavina and Maurice Turcotte. While we all know and love this local eatery , food trucks in general, chip stands in particular, are taken quite for granted in our Province and Country these days.
But 75 years ago when the Turcottes had dragged an old trailer home to Mattawa and announced they were going to start a business where you cooked the french fries in a trailer and sold them to people …
Well ??? You can just imagine the comments. Regardless, they started their business.
2nd Generation …
In time, it was taken over by son Danny and his wife Celine, along with Danny Jr.
3rd Generation …
In April 2015, Danny Jr. and his wife Tamra, with their son Dali, officially became third generation for this family owned and operated business.
We celebrated with them with this Special Community Exhibit
Danny Jr. is also a well known photographer.
He and Tamra, along with Dali, had traveled to Machu Pichu in Peru. When they came back, Danny entered one of his photos to Lonely Planet.
He won 1st prize…
which was an all expenses paid trip to Abu Dhabi!
Community Interest …
Part of our exhibit in the museum was the canvas print of that winning photograph from Peru. Many times over the season, visitors to the museum would comment on how beautiful the photograph was, but also, wouldn’t it be wonderful to see pictures of the trip! With so many requests, how could we say no. In these days of COVID-19, consider this our gift of travel.
Danny put together a beautiful album for everyone to enjoy.
